Gao’s Kung Fu Academy was founded by Master Xian Gao in 1995 in New York City. As diverse as New York City is, with people from many different countries and cultures, there are almost an equal amount of martial arts schools, each special in their own way, characterized by different styles, philosophies, historic significance, and so forth. What makes our school unique is Master Gao’s way of teaching and the current group of students we have. Master Gao learned traditional and modern wushu/kung fu from different teachers in his early years while pursuing a martial arts career and in turn, he has taught hundreds to thousands of students over the years both in China and the US. From this experience he has developed a curriculum that would suit students from various different backgrounds and with different goals in mind. Some students are deeply interested in the artistic side of martial arts and would like to get a taste of being a martial artist, some train to supplement their acting career, and some continue to come for a good workout.

______

Students at our school are highly motivated and Master Gao is often moved by their passion for kung fu. He is happy to point out their mistakes and then show them the way to improve their skills. He strongly discourages students from overloading their bodies and stresses his belief that elevating one’s kung fu ability takes time and persistence. On the contrary, he believes that over-working causes frequent injuries which would only slow the student’s progress. It is his belief that martial arts practice requires “lots of effort” yet should be enjoyable at the same time. He often says, “After a good draining practice, even water tastes sweet”. We are lucky to have good students at the school who are nice and respectful to one another. They help each other both inside and outside the class. It is a positive and friendly environment to learn the ancient and profound arts of kung fu, and we hope to see you soon in the class.
